Apologies to those I told I would be free by about now. I started feeling really badly last night while writing a paper. I decided to sleep but was unable to do so because of the discomfort, and while awake and upright, I made little progress on the paper for the same reason. When I tried to eat something early in the morning, I retched. So I emailed my professor, said I had food poisoning and that I wasn't going to produce a worthwhile paper by 3:00 without time to recover, rest, and find something to eat, and she said I could turn it in monday.

I still have to work on this paper. On the plus side, I just slept for over 4 hours, and I'm starting to get some food into me without feeling sick (even if it is just bread and butter at the moment), and assuming eat enough to stop feeling a little dizzy, I'll be fine shortly.

I'll be done when I'm done, but I'm not yet. Any plans we had before monday may have to go on hold.

How many cities have you lived in? 3

So it's been forever since I posted, I know. Some aspects of my life have been exciting, others haven't. The most important events that have happened recently, I don't feel like putting out there for everyone to see, or even anyone to see unless I talk to you personally about them. But, I'm back in school for my last semester, enjoying the return to my close friends here. I've applied to grad schools and just returned from my first visit/interview, at MSU. I'm trying to write up my work from last semester into a senior thesis and am already behind, and I'm going to be putting on a recital on April 24th. I feel like I never get quite enough done or get enough sleep, but a lot of the reasons for that are worth it (midnight massage/silliness party on wednesday ^_^ ). If you want to know more, I'd love to talk with you in person.

So, many of you probably wonder what I've been doing down in TN for the whole semester. I just had to write an abstract (it may not be quite in it's final form, but it's close) describing just that, so I thought I'd post it and get you up to date. Last names have been dropped to protect probably nobody. But I did it anyway.

The Chicane Node in the ORBIT Injection Upgrade

Daniel -
Albion College, Albion MI
Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships/Oak Ridge Science Semester
Sarah -, Mentor
Accelerator Systems Division
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

ABSTRACT

The accumulator ring in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) will accumulate up to 10^14 protons at a time from a 1 GeV linear accelerator to produce neutrons by spallation. In order to satisfy radiation hazard requirements, no more than 0.01% of the beam in the SNS ring may be lost by collisions with the beam pipe. Since most accelerators lose 1-2% of their beam, the SNS must be far more effective in beam loss control than any previous high-intensity accelerator. This requires very precise understanding of the mechanisms which contribute to beam loss. One of the main sources of loss in the accelerator is in the injection area of the ring, where H- particles are converted to protons by passing through a thin foil that strips off the electrons. Some of the H- particles are not fully stripped, and live for a short time as H0 particles in excited quantum states before decaying in the ring magnetic fields. If the magnetic fields are not optimized, particles that decay may be deflected from the paths intended for either H- or protons and become lost in the accelerator. The SNS project will upgrade the beam power in the year 2010, and this will require a redesign of the injection region of the ring. Testing of new design schemes will be done primarily with the Objective Ring Beam Injection and Tracking Code (ORBIT), a modular simulation package designed at SNS specifically for modeling high intensity rings. In this project, the ORBIT code was upgraded to allow precise simulations of the injection region of the ring. This work included installing code that performs detailed tracking of all three relevant states of hydrogen through the dipole magnetic fields in the injection region, and determines on each step which neutral particles decay into protons. The physical configuration of the chicane is customizable, allowing particle positions to be compared to the real location of the beam pipe and losses to be determined. The code is configured to allow parallel runs on multiple machines to accommodate computationally intensive tests. Results from this code were benchmarked with previous studies of excited-state decay done by Danilov and Galambos et al, and showed excellent agreement. Future modifications to the ORBIT injection region code may include a foil heating routine and propagation through higher-order magnetic fields. The updated ORBIT code will provide an important tool for optimizing the new injection region design.

In other news, I'll be in A2 for the long thanksgiving weekend, and then again for many weeks starting Dec 10. If you'll be in the area, I'd love to hang out.

Easter: a new entry

Wow, it has been incredibly long since I last posted, especially anything of substance. But I had a good weekend, and I thought I'd fill people in on it.

Got home friday, fairly early in the afternoon. It would have been really nice to have friday off completely (I mean, it was good friday. Not that I'm Christian, but days off from school get a thumbs up from me) and get back thursday, but as it was all classes ended at noon, giving me (whee!) one less hour on campus than a regular friday. Oh well. But yeah, got home and rested a bit before Lauren came over and we hung out for a while. Had dinner with my parents out at Cottage Inn (the restaurant than inspired the pizza chain, not just a pizza place) which was nice. I really like how well my parents get along with my girlfriend.

Anyway, we came back and Lauren and I watched An American Tale since Lauren decided that if I didn't really remember it from whenever I saw it as a kid then I had to watch it again (plus I had forgotten to bring home any Farscape episodes to watch). It was enjoyable, and I kinda understand the sentiment. I mean, I was flabbergasted that she had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy when we first started dating. We fixed that pretty quickly. But yeah, finished watching the movie and then played Pinochle with my parents (something we've taken to doing as the four of us) and then when they went to bed, Lauren and I went over to her apartment and followed suit. It's just nice to be there with her, and get to fall asleep and wake up beside her, holding her in my arms. ♥

So, next morning we woke up, cuddled for far longer than we meant to (what a surprise) and then I left for a few hours so she could get some work done. I, of course, hung out with Chris instead. So we played Smash Bros. (original, not Melee, it's much better) and chess, as usual. Of course, I was due at Lauren's mom's house (since I had been invited over for dinner and cards) at 6 so I tried to rush through the chess game. Bad idea. I played awfully and we still had to copy it down to a piece of paper to finish later. So yeah, over to Lauren's mom's house for a wonderful dinner and then cards with her mom and her boyfriend, and then the grandparents. It amused me: three generations of women, and their men.

The card game is called Shanghai and it's a lot of fun. This weekend was only my second time playing it. It's kind of like rummy in that you put down runs or books to try to get rid of all of your cards and not get stuck with points at the end of a hand. It's played with multiple decks though, and there are a lot of different rules also. But I won 3 of the 6 hands in the first game we played and still managed to come in second to last, and then almost got second the second time (with only one win) until the last hand when I got bumped far into third. Lauren's grandfather was just too lucky that time.

Today was kind of more of the same. Got up late, dealt with some stuff at home. Went over to Lauren's to play cards again (same game, but with more of the extended family this time). However, the first hand (usually one of the shortest) took a long time, and then we realized that the reason everyone had a lot of face cards was because a pinochle deck had gotten shuffled in. At that point, I decided that I really couldn't stay around for the whole game, so I went home and (surprise!) hung out with Chris. Finished that chess game, which I not surprisingly lost, but I beat him in the rematch. He had dinner with my family, our Easter traditional calzonies (made with bread dough shaped into a pocket and then baked with spinach and cheese inside them). And now I'm back here. About to head off to what I think is my final eboard meeting ever for Phi Mu Alpha, since we just had elections and are transitioning this week. Good stuff. And of course I got no homework done all weekend.

So yeah. Sorry for the long play-by-play since I know that can get annoying and you probably don't care all that much. But I suppose I just really enjoyed my weekend, and I wanted everyone who still reads this after the long period of inactivity to know that I'm still alive, and in general am happy. So, I suppose in summary for those of you who I don't keep in contact with as much as I should:

I've been dating an amazing lady for almost 10 months, and she enjoys spending time with my family and I do with hers. I have tickets to see Wicked with her in Chicago for our one-year. I still get to see my other friends. School is going as well as school can go, and the summer is coming. I'm going on a 9-day choir tour of England after school gets out (remind anyone of 4 years ago?) and then will be doing research here at Albion for the summer. Then for the fall I'm heading down to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to do more, different research (and again get paid, but also get class credit). And then... who knows. One more semester here and off to grad school somewhere.

Quite a fun weekend. I got to spend all of it with Lauren. *does a little dance*

She came up friday afternoon and stayed until this afternoon, and we:

had pizza with some friends here, went to see the comedian in the stack (she was quite funny), hung out at the FMA/SAI/KKY bonfire for a while, explored the playground near here, played chess, watched farscape, made a poor attempt at studying while laying out on the quad, and just in general spent the weekend together. It was great!

Tonight i got almost nothing done. I fooled around on the computer, watched TV (it was kinda interesting, because someone I vaguely remember from high school was on 'The Search for the New Partridge Family'), ate at the eat shop since I didn't feel like dealing with Balwin. But it's all good, since I got to see Lauren earlier.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to go to e-board tonight. Just plain out forgot. I was sitting in here kinda looking at my homework at the time and getting none of it done. Sorry guys.

But did I mention I got to see Lauren?

Have you ever noticed it's when you don't have time to post that you have the most stuff to post about?

Went backpacking with my dad for 5 days in New Hampshire, getting back this past wednesday. It was good to see him again, since he's been gone all summer. It was a kinda difficult hike for me though, because my brother has been faster than me for a while, and my dad has been hiking for months and is in shape, so I was always lagging quite a bit behind. Oh well. He's got over 1700 miles behind him and only 400 left to go to Mt. Katadin, the end of the line. He hopes to finish at the end of september. However, he is currently off the trail, having helped my brother move in to Tech this weekend.

Got back, packed. The rest of my family left to bring my brother up to school friday morning, so naturally I spent time with Lauren friday night. She helped me move in saturday, for which I'm eternally thankful, and of course it gave us more time together. ^_^

And then came the computer crisis. I decided that I was going to continue working on the research project I worked on over the summer, in hopes of getting a paper with my name on it out at some point. However, the only way I can really do this is to remotely log into a umich unix-based machine. I thought the easiest way to do this would be to dual-boot my computer, that is partition my harddrive and put windows on part of it and linux on the rest. My dad did it a while back, and said it was easy.

So here's the problem. I tried it yesterday after getting settled in. I don't have the original windows install disk, I only have the HP System Recovery disk, which installs windows plus some other useful (and some not useful) stuff. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me the option of partitioning my harddrive. It gives me the option of only restoring one partition, but since my whole hard drive is only taken up with one partition at the moment, that doesn't do me any good.

Again unfortunately, this wasn't obvious until after I started the process, so I reformated my computer for nothing (yes, I did back up my files first). Well, I still had internet, so I was good right? Except that after 5 minute of being online, I stopped being able to access any pages except the Albion college pages. After a long discussion with IT, they decided I had probably managed to pick up a virus, seeing as I installed windows as it existed two years ago, without any security patches and without working anti-virus software. So IT has my computer for the next two days. I walked into my room a few times today after taking it in, and I couldn't figure out what to do with myself. I mean, there was just this big empty hole in the middle of my desk, and all I could do was sit and stare at it. *sigh*

So you get this post from the Quantitative Skills Center (QSC)in the Albion College Library. I'm here tutoring for Physics 6 hours a week, which means sitting around up here with a computer or doing my own work until someone comes and asks for help, but getting paid for it. And of course, it's the first day of classes, so no one is coming in for help yet. I mean, if you have to come in to the student tutors on the first day, you should probably just drop the class. But in any case, my computer access is limited for a while, so emails will take a while to reach me. Use the cell if you need a fast answer.

Anyway, I've thought up a way to do what I originally wanted to do. I can use someone else's windows install disk to partition my harddrive, and then use the hp system recovery disk to install on just one partition. Only problem is, I need a windows XP install disk to do this. Any volunteers?

My internet hasn't been staying on consistantly for the past couple of days, and has been just not working for the past 24 hours. So I'm posting from work to let you all know that you probably shouldn't try to contact me that way for a bit.

Not a whole lot to report other than that. Busy with work, heading up to another singing event this weekend. And I see a lot of Lauren. =D

Summer is almost over, as far as I'm concerned. Which is not good, because it will decrease the frequency mentioned in the last paragraph. Although I am looking forward to seeing Albion people. But yeah, my final presentation at work is tomorrow (I suppose I should get back to that, huh), I'm gone for the weekend at an Albion Pro Choral event in bayview, get back for the last week of work, leave for 4-5 days with friends, get back for 2 days, leave for 5 days with my dad and brother, get back for 3 days, move in.

So little time.
